💡 How the discount is calculated

  • Percentage mode: savings equal the price times the percentage, so save = price × (percent ÷ 100) and the final price is what's left.
  • Fixed amount mode: the amount is subtracted from the price, and the effective discount shows what percentage that amount represents.
  • Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together — a 25% then 10% deal is a 32.5% effective discount, not 35%.

The Discount Calculator turns any sale into two numbers that actually matter: how much you save and what you finally pay. Enter the original price, choose a percentage or a fixed amount off, and read the result instantly.

Everything is computed live in your browser, with no uploads and no signup. It is the fast way to check whether a "big" discount is really as good as the sticker suggests.

How to use the discount calculator

  1. Enter the original price of the item.
  2. Choose your discount type: a percentage such as 25 percent, or a fixed amount such as 15 off.
  3. Type the discount value.
  4. Optionally tick stack a second discount to apply another deal on top.
  5. Read your savings, the final price, and the effective discount as you type.

How is a discount calculated?

In percentage mode, the savings equal the price multiplied by the percentage. So 25 percent off an 80 item saves 20 and leaves a final price of 60.

In fixed amount mode, the amount is subtracted directly from the price. The tool then shows the effective discount — the percentage that fixed saving represents — so a 20 saving on an 80 item reads as 25 percent off.

Why does the final price never go negative?

If a fixed discount is larger than the price, the calculator caps the final price at zero instead of showing a negative number.

Savings are capped at the full original price too, which keeps the result honest for very deep or oversized discounts.

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacking applies one discount after another, not by adding the percentages together. This is where many shoppers overestimate a deal.

A 25 percent discount followed by a 10 percent discount is not 35 percent off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the effective saving is 32.5 percent, not 35 percent.

When would you stack two discounts?

Coupon codes combined with a storewide sale are the classic case, along with loyalty rewards layered on top of a clearance price.

Switch on the second discount, enter its value, and the effective discount figure reveals what the combined offer is really worth.

Discounts and the rest of your money math

A discount is a percentage question turned inside out, and the underlying skill applies everywhere. If you want to work with the raw percentages directly, the Percentage Calculator handles any increase, decrease, or "percent of" problem.

Once you know the sale price, tax usually comes next at the register. The Sales Tax Calculator adds the correct tax to your discounted total so there are no surprises at checkout.

Discounts and gratuities are two sides of the same percentage coin. When you are dining out instead of shopping, the Tip Calculator works out a fair tip and splits the bill between friends.

Why check discounts before you buy?

Retailers present offers in whichever way sounds most impressive, and a headline percentage does not always translate into the biggest saving.

Running the numbers takes seconds and lets you compare a straight percentage against a fixed amount off, or judge whether stacking two smaller deals beats one large one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the savings, then subtract that from the price for the final cost. For example, 25 percent off an 80 price saves 20 and leaves a final price of 60. The calculator does this the instant you type.

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacked discounts apply one after another rather than being added together. A 25 percent discount followed by a 10 percent discount is not 35 percent off; the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, giving an effective 32.5 percent off the original.

What is an effective discount percentage?

The effective discount is the total savings expressed as a percentage of the original price. It is most useful in fixed-amount mode or when stacking deals, because it converts a money saving or a chain of discounts into a single comparable percentage.

Can I enter a fixed amount off instead of a percentage?

Yes. Switch to fixed amount mode and enter the money value taken off the price, such as 15 off. The tool subtracts it, shows the final price, and calculates what percentage that amount represents so you can compare deals fairly.

Does the final price ever go below zero?

No. If a fixed discount or a stacked pair of discounts is larger than the price itself, the calculator caps the final price at zero rather than showing a negative number, and the savings are capped at the full original price.

Is the discount calculator free and private?

Yes. It is completely free with no signup, and every calculation runs locally in your browser. No prices or figures you enter are ever uploaded, logged, or stored on a server.
